Combine uncertain economic times, a black president, a sense of American exceptionalism, an Internet that allows so many likeminded gun freaks to congregate and confirm their worst fears and conspiracies in an insular echo chamber, and then throw in a politically connected corporate shill like the NRA, and you have one hell of a combustible mix.
