Semi autos when used for hunting can be more humane because if you hit an animal and don't kill it on the first shot, it will often run (sometimes to the point of not being found again) and you can get another shot or more off without losing the sight picture, standing a much better chance of ending it more quickly and more humanely.

When used for self defense, the same rules apply. But in that case, the offender may be running AT you with ill intent.
