Icon Good Judgement and a Political Superstare

Three things spring to mind on seeing the spectacular rally in Philly. Four, really.

First the profoundly good and deep judgement that Joe Biden displayed as he led us out of the disastrous Trump/COVID years, and lastly by picking Kamala Harris and choosing to step down..

I say this because, number two, when push came to shove, and she had to make the most important introductory statement about her campaign and her intentions, she showed good and deep and dare I say humble judgement, integrity and character in choosing Tim Walz as her running mate.

Because, three, Tim Walz is a political superstar. She knows full well that he is. A powerhouse speaker, a compelling back story with the record to prove it, a superstar. Instead of fearing being overshadowed by this, she embraces it. With this choice she demonstrates that she understands that this election is not about her, or any individual. She demonstrates character, humility, and that she understands the importance of this win.

Which brings us to the fourth. The rally and the campaign to date is not about how great Kamala Harris is. It's about how great we are. It's about the idea of democracy itself.

I believe this pair will win.  How well will they fulfil their promises? Well, let's find out. Andi is out there pounding the pavement to give us that chance. Let's let that be an inspiration to us all, and do what we can to work like her, for the sake of democracy itself. We have seen the results of fascist kleptocracies, and we have been teetering on the edge of one for far too long. We still are.

Joe Biden did a great nuts and bolts job as president, but I believe he will ultimately be remembered as a person who defended democracy at its most fragile point, and who cannily and painstakingly set the stage for its rebirth.
