Speaking of getting things tossed my way my wife and I received an unsolicited mailing today from a group calling itself the Defense Of Marriage Coalition asking us to sign a petition and make a donation. This was our response:
Dear DOMC,
We don’t believe that any other couple’s marriage has ANYTHING to do with the quality or sanctity of our marriage. We would like a chance to rebut the assertions from your mailing.
DANGERS OF DIFFERENT-SEX MARRIAGE
- Same sex marriage deprives children of a mother and a father. Different sex marriages sometimes end up in divorce. Maybe a kid loses a parent that way. Or maybe there’s a tragic accident or an untimely life-ending disease. Maybe a kid loses a parent that way. Sometimes kids HAVE a mother and a father and wish they didn’t. All those scenarios are tragedies that can cause a kid to despair and possibly go bad. But it is NOT a tragedy to have two parents the same sex. It’s a tragedy to lose a parent or have a parent who doesn’t love you whether they are the same sex or not.
- Public schools will NOT be forced to teach that “gay” marriage is equal to traditional marriage. Where do you get this crap? Public schools don’t have to say anything about marriage now so why would they have to later?
- You already said it. “Sex education classes COULD be required to teach homosexuality as a legitimate option”. The operative word is COULD. Again, we don’t see the connection between gay marriage and what is taught in the schools. We don’t think the people who want to get married are looking for anything else BUT to get married. And as far as we can tell homosexuality IS a legitimate option anyway.
- This argument does not make sense. You’re saying that since same-sex marriage was legalized in The Netherlands STDs have increased. We don’t think that can be true. If the couple is healthy at the start of the marriage and remain faithful to each other then there can be no expectation of them contracting an STD. We believe that the statistic is really showing that these people are caring for each other more and more cases are getting treated earlier.
