Assassination is a tricky business, though, I remember the tale of Wang Jing Wei, Chiang Kai Shek's second in command, who tried to betray Chiang to the Japanese in return for control of (if I remember right) Shanghai, and surrounding regions. Chiang tried to kill Wang Jing Wei a half dozen times before they even winged him, and those were professionals.
