That's definitely a different way to look at it. I see it like this. Putin isn't stopping with Ukraine. He wants more countries, like Poland for example. He doesn't care about how many young (or old) man are killed in his vanity war, he just wants Ukraine. He feels slighted (probably not the right word) because of how Ukraine is once again its own country despite having such historical cultural ties to Russia. Putin sees having Ukraine as another notch in his belt nothing more/northing less. He is used to getting what he wants when and how he wants it. He is NOT used to people resisting him like Ukraine is doing now.

If you haven't already, listen to the podcast Gaslit Nation, although you may need to go back to the to some of the earlier episodes. Putin is not only a trained KGB agent and authoritarian leader, but he also is a narcissist and just doesn't care what happens to other people as long as he gets what he wants. His oligarchs give him what he wants and if they don't he doesn't "tweet" at them, he throws them out a window. Olga Lautman and Masha Gessen (both of whom I'm sure you probably already know about) both have the experience of living in Russia and seeing up close and personal what Putin is capable of. I really, truly doubt that he ever would have considered negotiating unless it was to say "ok I'll keep the part of Crimea I already took in 2014 and I'll take this part of Ukraine here and then I'll leave them alone." and under his breath he'd say "until 10 years from now when I'm going to come back and take the entire western half of Ukraine." But I also know there are differing views on the subject.
