They were mostly serious suggestions and quite a few rate a mention on this site too - Lloyd Cole
Ah, yes, Lloyd Cole. The answer that got me a slightly less puzzled look than David Baerwald when asked my musical preferences. DB unfailingly got me mystified stares (and I'd run for the CD and force play it for the asker) and Lloyd Cole just usually got me a similar response. Except among heavy drinkers and cocaine users who seemed to sense a cosmic connection.
Cole is a master of phrase, "I feel like a dirty politician trying to sell a broken-down car to a sleeping virgin princess." AKA, the guy from "Silver or Lead" if he'd had a shred of self-awareness.
Another favorite, talking about the sleaze in "Downtown" is "I want to see something I might desire, I want to take you down, baby, into the mire." Anyone know what movie that was in? Or was it "Lost Weekend" or both? The CD I think is the newest, The Negatives, is melodic if not an instant standout for me, but has some great self parody about his earlier songs.
Noiw I've got to go listen for other favorite lines. And, I will continue to try and figure out what the deal was with Amsterdam. It's featured prominently on several albums. And, the more I reminisce, there are DB phrases and LC lines that remind me of each other, which explaines the affinity I have for both.
