The primary ingredients sonically were A: Bill's extraordinary engineering skills; B: His Neve 8058 console; a Studer A827 tape machine; C: His marvelous collection of microphones; and D: The general sound and vibe of Toad Hall, his studio. He also made extensive use of a Fairchild 670 compressor and tube eqs, primarily a couple of Pultecs. The record took about three months after writing. The loops were made from a visit by his brother ( a general contractor) to the studio with an array of electric saws, air compressors, air drills, some welding equipment, spray cans, etc... We sampled them into an Akai S1000 and keymapped them across the scale, so you could play the samples reeeeaaaaal slooooow, or realfast, depending on what the intent was. We also used my Eventide H3000 pretty extensively for reverbs and such, most notably probably on "Bitter Tree" and "Born For Love", but most of the reverb on that record came from a Quantec Room Simulator.
