well, that was fun. good time at the big SQ last night - big crowd, lotsa cameras, good arguments - and a churro vendor. :)
that was probably the highlight for me; they were really fresh, with just the right amount of sugar on 'em. yum.
i'm a bit divided on this one, though. the Tookster reformed quite a bit but was also rather unrepentent at the same time, so unable to garner the necessary mercy. in the end, i suppose Jesus would've swabbed and injected, eh? still, i would have preferred to just let him rot alive...or - give the families the option of 'pulling the trigger'. charge admission, do a pay-per-view, with proceeds going to the victims' families. too much fun!
or better yet, let him live, so he could establish a viable alternative to the tired old Crips vs. Bloods dynamic; i've always been a proponent of a three-party system.
tragedy all around, or was it just vengeance masquerading as justice again? i do know that, after having spent many years working with gang kids from Oakland and SF, the 'the death penalty is a deterrant' argument holds little water, whatever the crime stats supposedly say. turf & testosterone-based crimes of anger don't take much into account beyond the moment's emotions, but the death penalty makes some voters feel safer for some odd reason. public support for it continues to fall, and some day we'll move beyond it. until then, however, i support a daily Kristalnacht against hobbits. amen!
