I recall not long after the US invaded Afghanistan one of the Taliban pointed out that the US did not understand the history of the region and never would and added it was not if the US military ever left Afghanistan, but instead only "when" and to them, it mattered little if that was years or decades or even centuries because they knew the US would leave.

Not arguing about whether to go or stay, but just how the US and its citizens are so poorly informed when it comes to other countries and cultures.
