Pat, the statistic you cite is meaningless. There is simply no extrapolation of meaning in the simple statistics.

I'm not knocking the statistic, but the first thing that jumps out to me is exactly what are those 25 percent in federal custody for? To further illustrate, what percentage of that is for entering the US illegally? Lastly, people in federal custody is not a relatively large number (it would have more impact if the numbers was 25 percent of ALL those incarcerated).

From the stats, there are less than 200k in Fed Prison, while 2.4 mil in total custody. Immigration offenses come in at 13K. A relatively small drop in the bucket.

See, and this is one more reason why so much debate about all this is pointless the way it is done.

It becomes the Willie Horton method of debate and gets us nowhere because it frightens too many policy makers to attempt innovative strategies because out there some where is some yapper out there waiting to yell "Gotcha" when a celebrated case hits the fan.
