I know I have many blindspots and I take your point, Ross, about the speed with which cultural changes have sent conservatives, and especially those who are devoutly religious, into something like a moral panic. I don't think those of us who are largely secular can appreciate their fears. And I celebrate the enormous gains for gay Americans, but it was a hell of a jolt to those on the right whose religious beliefs mean everything to them. 

I think we need a sensible center that is willing to push back on those at the extremes. I have more than once criticized the uber-woke folk who advocate for abolishing the police, who marinate in identity politics, who happily de-platform speakers on college campuses, who shut down speech, who intimidate those who refuse to raise a fist for BLM. There's such a Stalinist side to the far left. Fortunately, the far left doesn't have the hold on Democrats that the Trumpers have on the GOP. Because of fear of Dear Leader, the lunatic right have gone mainstream in the GOP.
