Interesting article. Here's my take based on the little I read and understood:

My gut feel is to sympathize with the student, but . . . Schools are not democracies, and they aren't really free speech zones either. If she really called an instructor or administrator the name she did, and it was in a public-enough forum that it would get back to campus, then she was in a way being willfully insubordinate. In that context, it does not seem to me that the punishment truly fits the crime, but I cannot see the school letting it go unchecked either. What she said seems dreadfully immature, and perhaps the best lesson she could learn is a little humility.
