Just common sense, Peter, no cause for alarm. Handwashing is the only thing which can help. Your statistic includes hospital acquired infections which cannot be prevented entirely, but can be cut down somewhat. The term for them is Nosocomial Infections, and they've been here since time immemorial, and always will occur to some degree, because of mutations against antibiotics and patient to patient spread. They are a fact of hospital life, and a risk one does acquire when entering the hospital, especially inpatient units (much less with outpatient procedures). The benefit of antibiotics far outweighs their risk and more lives have been saved with their use, however there is understandable fallout. Healthcare workers need to wash hands before and after seeing patients; warm water and soap. If this is accomplished, infection rates will drop. Plus,..handwashing can be fun. This is a little off topic, but there is a prayer for ceremonial handwashing in Judaism. I say it from time to time on the Sabbath, but religious Jews say it daily. It is very soothing, and draws one's attention to a seemingly mundane act, but one which can actually focus the spirit.
