"Ironic how a such a slam could occur on a thread devoted to the band that defines insipid, "Boston" (and hey, I went to college there, and I love the city, but have no use for the band)." Peter T:  I hope the question is received in the spirit it is meant when I ask why you find the music of Boston to be the definition of "insipid," meaning without taste.  What are the specific qualities of that music that make you feel that either its creators or those who enjoy listening to it are tasteless?  (Have you tasted a Boston fan lately?  That's a joke.)

I like their early stuff, and much of the later stuff, but for me it's mainly a memory trip.  I had older siblings who played those early albums some, and I grew to like that stuff when I was young.  Likewise with quite a few other bands who saw their stock rise in the 70's, like Yes, The Who, Gentle Giant, Rush, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Queen, Alan Parsons Project, ELO, etc.  I enjoyed (and still enjoy) the complexity, the headphone-consciousness, the marriage of intricate sound to intricate lyrics . . .

(Not to say that any one of those bands didn't have a stinker here & there, but the I like the general cut of their gib.)

"I urge you to go to Youtube and check out "Clampdown", "Safe European Home", or "Police and Thieves". " I have tried on occasion to get into these guys (The Clash), but I fear I'll never own the taste that would make me want to return to their songs to fulfill the uses I have for music, or what I need from it.

I would love to know what it is that you find attractive (or "sipid") about these songs, or others in the band's catalog.  What, exactly, makes 'em "tasty" to you?  Again, I ask in the spirit of inquiry, not competitiveness.

"The influence of The Clash continues to grow, and further comments from me would be redundant. LISTEN TO THE MUSIC! " At your urging, I've once again tried listening to these guys & once again come away thinking "nah."  One more question for you:  where do you see The Clash's influence growing?  And would you mind making a few of those "further comments"?  I don't mind redundancy.
