I worked for a half a dozen years as a hospice social worker, and in those years I tended to hundreds of families and patients through the dying process.
During that time I had to take our cat to the vet and put her down. She was old and failing quickly. It was the time I cried the hardest in all those six years.
Funny how the passing of a pet seems to distill all the sadness and loss in the world in that single event.
