I think this thread amply demonstrates the inherent weakness in attempting to prove a theory using anecdotal evidence. Each of us could present a handful of examples which would appear to bolster our individual opinions. In the case of media bias, at most, each post has less than ten examples of "evidence" of bias. And this out of literally thousands of media outlets from movies, television, radio, internet, and print. The only way to even come close to answering the question of bias is to establish an objective methodology and perform a comprehensive study (people can scream academic elitism, but there really is no other viable option).
Please, search out these studies, they've been done, if the dusty halls of my memory serve me, I believe the true bias of the media is associated with "gatekeeping", those stories that actually become news. This may appear to suggest that the media corporations control the flow of news (now remember I'm talking comprehensively, not specifically, I absolutely believe some individuals and corporations, whether they are open or secretive, attermpt to manipulate the media). In my opinion, politicians and corporate elite on both sides of the political spectrum wield far more "gatekeeping" power than most of us realize. Our political leaders have hired press guns to manage news stories and the media cycle. Get your hands on a few press releases sent out by corporations to news outlets, than compare them to news stories, many media outlets use them almost verbatim.
whew! Reg, don't know how you do it, I'm already tired of typing/writing/opinionating, although I have more to say, I'll stop here and catch my digital breath . . .
