I've spent the last two decades among 11-12 year olds. Those are of course inherently challenging years, and they get more so as they progress into the upper grades. I'm convinced that screen time in general, and social media more specifically, are corrosive to their well being and healthy development.
It's been recognized that the social and emotional needs of children are not being met. Our school used a program that typically consisted of one-30 minute lesson per week. I thought it was a mixed bag, but thoughtfully created, and relevant lessons were present.
Some school systems have reflexively impeded the implementation of SEL curriculum. And to be fair, I would imagine that programs vary in quality and there are probably some lessons that I would personally shy away from.
I've posted a smart, heartfelt song that addresses kid's doubts, anxieties, and fears. I believe kids would benefit from hearing it and discussing its message both in class and at home. I think you'll dig it too!
PS to Dan: I can't find the instructions you sent me in order to embed the video in my post. I know, pathetic, and Peter T. calls himself an educator! HAH!
