: Today's music scene is disgusting and an insult to the intelligence of the purchaser of music. At least, the ones not queued up for the new teen idol to be shoved down their throats. It is a BUSINESS, like it or not.
Sure it's a business but I don't think the "music scene" is as bad as you make it out to be. I think today the situation with music is as interesting as it's ever been. It can be a bit overwhelming I think. There are so many bands and musicians out there and it's become so easy for them to get their music distributed. They don't have to go the major label route anymore. Just have a browse around cdbaby.com to see what I mean. The big labels buy the "product" they want to push and that's what gets forced down everybody's throat. You don't have to pay any attention to that though if you choose not to. It's only an insult to your intelligence if you choose to pay attention to them. That teen stuff is for the kids anyway and the other part of this equation you have to consider is that a lot of people don't care enough about music to go looking for stuff they won't hear or see on radio or television. What gets played is what gets played and that's good enough for them. Not everyone wants to take the time or make the effort to find other stuff.
: I don't like it, and that's because 95% of todays' music has no talent, integrity, or soul.
I agree with regards to the pop product that the big labels shovel but I don't think 95% of all the music that's out there is as bad as you say.
: But, the big companies do not give a fuck about the art, the message, or the music. All they care about is the $$$$$$$.
Yeah, that's what people are in business for...to make a buck. Sure they are greedy and they are fleecing folks for all they can. I have no pity for the moms & pops that want to shell out big bucks to take their kids to see Britney or NSYNC that's their choice and yeah it's a bad one. Same goes for those who will pay through the nose to see Streisand or The Eagles or The Rolling Stones. They define money making corporate greed rock. So on that count yeah I'm with you. Hell, even Neil Young on his last few swings through was looking to score big cash for tickets to his shows. It's no wonder Ticketmaster figures they can get a piece of the action. You won't find the best music at these shows though and really they are designed just for the "fans" that are willing to shell out that sort of dough to see their "heros". People will stop paying at some point though. I mean the "Stones" aren't what they were...they might have been worth that ticket price in their prime but now I think they're lucky to get it. I mean come on a bunch of old men with dentures running around in funny clothes cashing in on their past for all it's worth? Who the hell would want to pay to see that? They like to compare themselves to their blues legend idols but Muddy Waters never made a fool of himself like these guys do and never got paid that sort of crazy money to do so.
: So, instead of spending outrageous amounts of money on shows I will end up not enjoying, I spent the money on a home theatre system that cost about as much money as the new car my wife and I just bought.
You're still filling their coffers buying this stuff too you know. Does it say Sony on it? Same conglomerates right Kent?
: We have no security guards arresting us for lighting up during the show. Never mind what I am lighting up, because in our no-fun-allowed arena, even cigarettes are verboten, and is cause for removal from the show.
Quitting smoking takes money out of some of the right pockets so I'd have to say I'm not against a "No Smoking" policy. Funny huh?
: I have no idiot spilling beer on my wife, or no twelve year old girl in front of me who won't shut up, sit down, or you name it. It has all happened to me at one time or another.
Well, you do sound a little bitter here now Kent.
: I have just purchased an all-region NTSC/PAL DVD player, and I have just purchased twenty imported concerts from Europe, none of which are available in Region 1 (North America). This includes 4 YES shows and 2 PINK FLOYD shows.
Again you didn't spend it on their tickets but you did buy their product now didn't you.
: After the show, I will go back to my moratorium of "industry" events, because just like with any BUSINESS, I do not have to spend my money there.
: (Attending the June 14th Rochester, NY show)
I wouldn't call the Baerwald show a big corporate event.
