Believe me, I do not have any clue what the answer is to all of this, which only adds to my own fears.
I no longer have it, but a while back there was an article in Psychology Today regarding people and their beliefs and how their beliefs even grew stronger and more rigid when provided FACTS that their beliefs were factually incorrect. So, how do you go from here when an apparently intelligent person refuses to believe facts?
The other day, I also started to read a saved article from last year in the Atlantic about how politics has polluted American religion. It was written by a man identifying himself as a sincere Christian of great study and what it contained was such disgusting information (not of him, but from how American right-leaning "Christians" and church officials behave), that I put it down in disgust without finishing it (it was making me too sick and angry).
I am not religious and am, in fact, an atheist, but I have an idea of what a "sincere" Christian is "supposed" to be and these people are not it, nor is their leader Donald Trump. The author pointed out how so many of these people aren't even following the most basic established tenets of their faith and what the "Church" expects the to do and how to behave (the article was more complex when it came to these tenets but they included the complex ones found in religion and simple ones like lying, not spreading lies and the failure to correct wrong information when it is learned to be false).
My point in bringing up this article is that honest people KNOW Donald Trump is NOT religious, nor does he promote anything likened to religion. And in fact, Donald Trump is a horrible person, but still, these people follow him like he is a legitimate messiah.
I mean, shit, just look at this man's behavior these past seven or eight years - the content of his character is crystal clear and it only becomes more apparent each and every day. But these people still retain and maintain and argue their beliefs and he is their frontrunner!
Yes, the information on the Internet matters, and it is a reflection of what a rotten fucking country this country has become - where facts don't matter, nor does the apparent behavior of degenerate people (I mean, shit, just look at what the one Federal judge just ruled - that the Biden Administration shall not try to do anything about disinformation found in social media. To be honest, I don't know the full particulars of the case, but what I have read from news sites is that the Biden admin shall not contact social media sites regarding the dissemination of wrong information - how fucked up is that?.).
I have former co-workers - fucking police officers! - that continue to support this man even after Jan 6. How the fuck can a police officer support a man that incited attackers that made other police officers fight for their lives and be beaten and attacked with all sorts of weapons? Then, these same people bitch and moan about "defund the police" when blacks declare it, but say nothing when Trump and Congress want to do the same fucking thing?
My last point is this - I think a lot of this denial comes simply from the makeup of one's brain and what parts developed here and there (oh, and also if one is white), and I think the only hope we have as a nation is if some sort of push starts to really focus on facts and this includes getting sincere Republicans involved and getting them to eradicate all the bullshit (I don't know if others here ever read pieces at the conservative site The Bulwark, but it does offer some hope that sincere Republicans and conservatives do still exist).
