Icon How much of what is on the internet is fake and does it matter?

So, this is a question now being considered because, well, a lot of what is on the internet is fake. Sadly, Dan can confirm that Mick and I are both real, he has met us both in person, so the world will have to cope with that. David Baerwald is real, several of us have met him in person. So, here, on this site at least, I think the vast majority of what we get here is real...real interaction with real people.

I would question if Pat Brown is real but David met him in person and he is real.  However, on places like Twitter, Facebook, and various social media platforms a lot of your interactions may not be with real people.

I'm not sure if these social media platforms have determined how many or how much of what is on their sites is actually real people contributing real content and what is bots contributing content to upset or aggravate people.  One article I read estimated that about 80% of what is on the internet is nonsense, generated by bots and AI and all designed to grab our attention and plant ideas and info in our heads.

Not just things that Trump says, he is his own not at all virtual bullshit generator, but just all kinds of utter nonsense meant to impact how we think and feel. Obviously, the internet is one massive opinion generator but are we really learning about other people's opinions or are we just being constantly bullshitted?

I mean, most of us are of a generation that did not grow up with the internet and so I feel like we, or at least I, am less prone to falling for nonsense on the web but we do know it works and it convinces people of a lot of truly nutty ideas...FOX built an entire empire on bullshit and total lies. So no surprise other Right Wing media has attempted to do the same.  It's interesting to me that most of the debates and conflicts these days are about total nonsense. It's like we are dealing with a massive epidemic of bullshit and there is no vaccination for it.

So, how much of what is on the internet, percentage is what I am asking, do you think is total nonsense or essentially fake stuff to grab our attention? If you think it is a lot, do you think it is a problem?
