That's such a good synopsis of where we are, Reg. It would be one thing if it was merely a percentage point or two of Republican voters that embraced the lunacy but it's clearly much higher than that. There have been so many off-ramps that people could have taken along the way to escape the madness but for many, they appear to be as entrenched as ever. Is this terminal to our democracy? I don't see how it's not if Republicans follow through with plans to rig the elections at the state level through toadies in positions of oversight and no federal legislation to address the corruption. Having a SCOTUS that actually represents the people would be nice as well, but we don't have that.
In aviation there's a thing called a flat spin where an aircraft in a stall loses forward momentum and spins around its vertical access while falling toward the ground. With no forward airspeed, the plane's controls are unable to change the pitch of the plane and aid in recovery. It most often results in catastrophe. If I had one descriptor to use to describe the state of our democracy, I'd say we're in a flat spin.
