I've seen various polls that state that about 25% of Americans look quite favorably on right-wing authoritarianism. Basically, they yearn for some strong man or strong institution to think for them and tell them what to do. It's not surprising that many of the people are religious or have an inordinately strong connection with militarism and law enforcement. Let's face it, life is uncertain, and sometimes tragically so. It's hard to navigate an increasingly complicated world and to figure our what's going on. I just got caught up on Reg's posts concerning the rogues gallery of individuals and groups who are just itching for things to go bad in a very big way. I do wonder though, the leadership at Fox News and other conservative media outlets have to see that if things go horribly wrong, they and their families have a lot to lose. What would a 21st century American Civil War look like? Given how interconnected the country and the world are, such a conflagration would sever supply chains in ways that the pandemic hasn't. Who is going to keep the lights on, the stores stocked, the patients serviced, the students educated, the trash collected, the water flowing? And how is Netflix going to produce the valuable content so essential to our entertainment needs? Anyone pining for this romantic civil war needs a dose of reality upside the head. Compared to much of the world, we have it pretty damn good!. We need to break the spell and walk back from the precipice. Forgive the double metaphors but you get my point.
