Icon So, I made it all the way through Bret's story...

Obviously, well to me, what happened at Evergreen was a whole lot of poor communication and some outrageously bad leadership. One thing that I think happens in situations like this is humans can be like a lot of other predatory animals and when they sense weakness or blood in the water the situation escalates because they pounce. The weak leadership caved, the students and staff sensed they had them and moved on them. Not really unusual.

Could all that have been avoided? Probably but it was hard to tell what the goals of anyone involved were based on what I saw in those videos. One thing I liked that Bret said at the end is that when he gets asked to speak about this over and over he repeats that this was not a free speech issue. I think he is right, it basically goes in the opposite direction in that everybody, as we have now in society with social media, was permitted to say whatever they wanted. In that case you end up with pandemonium and everybody attempting to shout over everybody else and that pretty much always escalates into something worse.

I don't think what we see in those videos is a situation that would be, or obviously should be, repeated. Hopefully it becomes more a lesson on how to avoid that sort of situation.

There is an aspect of the whole thing that is part of why we will probably continue to disagree over how dangerous or how influential the far left is and that is that while I see Robin DiAngelo, identified as some sort of expert on "whiteness" giving her fairly looney perspective, I would have extreme doubts that this sort of thinking would or ever could become the mainstream. I know the counter to my thinking on this is her book was a bestseller but this can be achieved in more than one way and I do not at all see that sort of lunacy ever being accepted by the vast majority of the population. Sure, I think what happened at Evergreen was ridiculous and also completely unfair and out of line. I don't see it becoming repetitive to the point where it happens all over the country.

In education or the entertainment industry I think we are likely to see some over the top stuff like this. I know my example above that involved my cousin probably makes it seem we could see a lot more of this spreading out into other industries but I don't believe that is likely. Most companies are financially motivated far more than motivated to engage in some racial justice campaign.

I know your goal here is to be fair and that the left should police themselves but they do. There is no foothold for the far left. Failure is pretty much baked in to their approach.

In terms of worrying about incidents happening and FOX news or right wing media using them...well...they are going to do that anyway, to everything. They are openly calling for defunding the military on FOX now. There is no getting through their wall of bullshit and those that buy into it are mostly a lost cause.

The right has gone over a cliff. They no longer matter because they are not living in reality. 51% of Republican voters think Trump should be reinstated as president. 75% believe the election was stolen. They are swimming in a sea of stupidity and ignorance and if you throw them a life preserver they will just throw it back at you.

The words "natural selection" appear to explain how this is going to get solved.
