Yes, and I completely agree with you, Ross.

In our area, it has been both a fascinating and devastating process to watch how all this police turmoil has played out over the last handful of years.  We have seen the police lose favor and lose quite a bit of political clout (which on an amusing turn has seen the local fire department union really grow in political power - in our town the police and fire rank and file are similar to good-natured cats and dogs that like to bicker a bit).

Unfortunately, we have had some legitimate police shootings that have been turned into controversies but have not resulted in any of the types of protests seen elsewhere (prior to retiring and after retiring current and former co-workers agreed that this small city is just one bad shooting away from blowing up).

I have been telling a friend of mine that in Illinois, police unions, police executives, and police lobbyists should be engaging the legislature and sincerely telling them that they WILL reform if given the chance, but I fear with the latest shooting in Chicago that it may be too late.

On top of this, I believe that with the older offensive police bodycam footage now coming out into the open through lawsuits, that legislation requiring ALL body cam footage to be reviewed for content is just around the corner, too.

Sadly, I can only imagine the amount of misconduct that has been captured but has gone unseen as of yet.
