I enjoy the Bosch series and Connelly's books, but the major criticism I have of his writing is he is terrible at cop humor. He just can't do it and I once explained to someone that there is great humor in policing - not that it is fabulously wonderful humor, but humor that is so wide and expansive. In other words, humor can almost be found in everything about policing and he just does not do that well.
Now, in the Bosch series, they did capture it very well in the one season with the antics of Crate and Barrell.
I just watched this one old series from down there called Secrets and Lies and I have to tell you - your natural world down there scares the crap out of me.
Have you seen The Wire? That to me is probably the best portrayal of urban policing in American (or much of it anyway - it did go overboard in some areas).
I'm enjoying a lot of foreign shows. I find they are so much better than a lot of US stuff. It's like good music, you just have to find them.
