And thanks to David Hume for that!
On Sunday, I had a relative attempt to bring up the conspiracy theory about Epstein's death. I was short
with
him because I've had it with the sometimes dangerous but typically preposterous theories we've seen over
the last few years. On the left, the 911 truthers, on the right, Vince Foster's death, Pizza-gate, Birthers,
Newtown Crisis Actors, and I don't even know which political side aligns with Chemtrails and anti-vaxxers.
Sometimes this shit can lead to violence as in the gun nut who though HRC ran a child pornography ring out
of a Washington DC pizza shop. Sometimes it's grotesque and cruel beyond words (Newtown), but most
often, and more importantly, it entails a massive opportunity cost and a loss of faith in our institutions to really
get at the truth of a matter.
No doubt the American Psychological Association can better explain the pathology behind those who
so
readily embrace such cockamamie but I've got a few questions. Is reality too challenging for these sad sacks?
Does it take too much effort to consume varied sources of credible, reality-based news ? Do they need
simple answers to complex and possibly unattainable questions?
As to Epstein procuring the sexual services of underage girls for himself, that's been established in spades,
and for some high-powered creepy buddies, it would not surprise me. And by all means, follow the leads
wherever they take you. But George Mitchell? Now THAT would shock me!
As far as his death being orchestrated by a sinister cabal of terrified former Epstein associates, seems
like a
stretch (no pun intended). But again, I'm open to where the evidence leads. When the NYT, the WSJ, and the
Christian Science Monitor all run it, I'll believe it.
