Reg, do you recall the Free State Project that was supposed to have 20,000 Libertarians move to New
Hampshire? Given our small population, the idea was that they could establish a beachhead here and get
their
members elected to state and national offices. Not a bad idea but the project, which began about 15 years
ago, has only brought 2,000 or so members here.
As to the video you posted, I was first struck by their positive tone: reasonable, candid, positive, even funny.
As to the issues that matter most to me, they bemoan the rising debt but I wonder if they would have
embraced austerity measures back in 2008 when the Obama administration took office. Since then, I think
the US has largely outpaced much of the world by not going the austerity route . They talk about cutting the
budget but there's no mention of a "grand bargain": reduce entitlements in exchange for some higher
taxation, especially on those who have done incredibly well for a long time. And as much as I'd like to see the
annual $700 billion dollar defense budget take a hit, I'm concerned about Russia and China. It would be
interesting to hear their views on the threats posed by those nations. I'm with them on eliminating mandatory
sentencing and the war on pot. They mention preserving the social safety net, which is a high priority for me,
but few specifics were offered (and I realize the interview's time constraints). No mention of climate change, a
serious omission in my opinion. I like it that guys like this are out there. And who knows, perhaps they'll make
incremental gains and one day even become serious contenders for office. But this year, given the existential
threat posed by Donald Trump, I'm voting for Hillary (especially here in NH where things could go either way).
