I didn't recognize the actor's name but I well remember the performance he delivered in the
riveting Martha, Marly, May, Marlene. This was one creepy, yet memorable flick.
My mother-in-law and I disagree on most everything and movies is one of them. She really
doesn't see much in the way of new films, certainly nothing indie or too off the beaten path. She
wears rose-colored glasses as she reflects upon the films that she grew up with. To her, they
were always wonderful, and those studio actors from the 40s and 50s have it all over today's
talent. As much as I love Peck, Tracy, Bogart, Davis, Hepburn, and that crowd, I think the skills of
so many contemporary actors and actresses far eclipse those heroes of yesteryear. And most of
them are toiling largely in anonymity, a credit to their acting transformations.
On the local level, my wife and I attend 6-8 plays a year at a regional theatre in Lowell, MA.
The
acting talent we witness is incredible. Hell, at our daughter's high school last year, we were
mightily impressed by the students' performances in Singin' in the Rain. Those kids were
inspired!
