Lung cancer (some forms, even "non-operable"), can be treated to some degree nowadays, extending quality lifetime. The regimens consist of various chemotherapeutic agents (with varying toxicities), but I've seen the newer combos produce some encouraging results in patients I would not have given much hope for initially. We're talking anything from months to sometimes a year or two, but any quality time is...quality time.
Quit smoking? The patches and gum help get rid of the nicotine craving, and immediate physiological withdrawal, but not the long term psychologic process...which is basically addiction. So...the only thing that REALLY works is sincere motivation. VERY encouraging is the FACT (yes, fact), that smokers who are determined to quit..usually succeed. It may not occur on the first go around, may take 2 or 3 tries, but if the MENTAL set is right from the outset, it is entirely possible, even with a multipack a day habit, to bag 'em forever. People who quit usually then become the biggest, and nastiest "anti-smokers" for the rest of their lives.
Good luck, if you're set out on that venture David...we love ya' (and so does your family, obviously), so we'd like to have you around for a long..long time.
Peace,
Gene
