I don't know how old you are Ross but Reagan's 'Just Say No' campaign was regarded as something of
a joke back in the 80's. It was the public centerpiece of their war on drugs, reflecting the conservative
mantra of 'personal responsibility' and pulling oneself up by their bootstraps. At the same time he was
cutting SSI benefits to disabled people and gutting the social service system that provided what little
treatment there was for the addicted and mentally ill.So, if you're detecting cynicism it's directed at the Reagans and not at those who struggle with their
own demons.
