Icon I don't believe in Sam Harris

One of my best friends is a Dawkins/Harris/Hitchens fan to the point that he's now kind of an 'atheist fundamentalist': intolerant of anyone who believes in anything they can't see, smell, touch, taste, etc;

I read Sam Harris at his urging last year and found Harris to be a poor historian, an apologist for torture by the Bush administration, and a kind of intellectual 'one-trick pony'. A shockingly vacant rant on religion that shed more heat than light, designed only to fire up readers already well-prepared to swallow Harris' screed and earn him a million bucks.

We're all (well, most of us are) sick of fundamentalists of every stripe gumming up the works. But substituting one form of intellectual dishonesty for another is not going to advance anybody's cause, except for the author's who whip this stuff out for the mob.

If you want to read a reasonable discourse on modern fundamentalism I'd suggest Karen Armstrong's "The Battle For God". Armstrong is a meticulous researcher and an engaging writer, but if you're looking for someone who panders to what you already think you know it may be a more demanding read.
