In my opinion REM became bloated by fame after Document and their music has never quite been the same... Depite moments of brilliance. I REMember seeing them during the Green tour and asking a bunch of people aftwerwards what they thought. Their main response? "Not bad for a new band." Think I'll go listen to Chronic Town... I actually saw them twice on that tour, once in San Antionio and once in Austin. The San Antonio venue was much smaller. I distinctly remember them playing We Walk from Murmer which was one of my fav's and they were much better than a new band. I did not like Robyn Hitchcock (opening act).
