The thing that a lot of people don't know is that Welles kept making films of his own and the other things he was doing - voice work, commercials, b-movies or worse - was all to fund his own work. He was doing his own thing out of his own pocket and he took forever to finish something. He was blacklisted and had legal troubles too. Also because he was traveling around to work for other people he would shoot bits and pieces of his own films wherever he was as time permitted. A true independent renegade filmmaker. Most of the studio films he did were taken away from him because he took too long cutting them but he was working on his own stuff right up until the end. F for Fake, if you have not seen it, is great and work he did in the 70s.
