Now that's just untrue. Adjusted for inflation, gasoline costs less than in the 1970's and takes up a lower portion of average monthly incomes. We have a bit of a catch-22. The country's infrastructure is built around driving and easy access to individual transportation. The size of the country almost demands that. But only an extended run at higher gas prices will produce the political will to do something about efficiency and/or alternative sources. The downside being, of course, that higher prices of what is essentially a staple good disproportionately affect the poor. But price controls have never been effective in any industry.
