Here's the deal, my wife has just started a new job teaching kids that are very advanced in the fields of mathematics and science. Now my wife is an incredibly bright young woman but her areas of expertise are really language and literature. She has been confronted with an interesting challenge in that every teacher at this school is assigned a few of the kids to help guide them through their research projects. The kids create these projects based on their interests. She feels a bit out of her element doing this so I thought I'd submit some info to you folks and see what you've got to add.
What I'm looking for is some suggestions to address the following:
1. What are possible variables / engineering obstacles relating to this project?
2. What would you see as a preliminary hypothesis / goal?
3. What sort of supplies / materials do you think might be needed or helpful?
4. General questions or suggestions to help guide these projects.
Now you might find this fun, interesting, and maybe there are folks out there that can relate to specific projects. As an example, one project relates to rock climbing and I know Brad is a climber. So, don't hold back dive right in on this please. You can pick one or make suggestions for all of them feel free.
So, here's the first group of research and engineering projects she has been assigned to guide.
Project One: Cricket Songs
How do different situations, circumstances, and pollutants affect or influence cricket's songs?
Project Two: Rock Climbing Device
This project involves inventing a new device to improve the safety of lead climbing on rock walls.
Project Three: Swimmers Device
This project involves inventing a device that a swimmer would wear to count the number of laps they swim. It will be able to detect change of direction and display this information.
Now I've already sat down and wrote some information for her but she's in a bit of a panic over this and wants to collect as much info as she can. So I'm asking for your help everybody. Based on the four basic questions I posed above or just free thinking...I'd be very thankful for any input.
