you've all made some excellent points, and i too hope he wasn't getting off on the stuff, but the penalty for paying for it will and should be what it will be. his state of arousal or not while viewing is perhaps the central and fairly unknowable issue here, however, given his history and previous comments about pedophilia, his reasons for viewing it are easier for me to believe than most i've heard. we'll see...
