Peter - the gasing of the Kurds was a decade ago, and it reminds us of what type of man we were dealing with. You say the inspections, sanctions, no fly zones worked -- maybe to some degree up until the time Sadamn stopped letting the UN Inspectors in . While these sanctions were in place he and his army were murdering the people they were "ruling" (mass graves of men , women with their children in their arms) , taking women off the street and abusing them . I think we all now this was occuring. As I recall, the UN kept telling Sadamm to let them in - and he kept refusing. This was right after 9-11 - and we just didn't know what was going on. We had to get in there. I agree with you, the loss of life and cost of this war is horrifying, to say the least. But I think we are seeing what has been building for a long time. This network of terrorists is sophisticated and evil - and this has to be addressed sooner ---or later. They are capable of anything (last year killing children in the Russian school). It is a mess - it's going to be a mess for a long time, and I hope that other goverments will step up to help us bring this to an end.
