These are just a few real live bits from my life over the past month. I just thought they were kinda funny and would cause a few people to pause and think about them for a second or two.

Item 1

My cousin, the Marine, called me on the phone the other day to talk to me about Mr. Felt coming out as Deep Throat. He was excited because we had just talked about it when he was up here staying with me. To his great dismay when he attempted to discuss it with the other Marines in his unit he discovered that none of them knew who Deep Throat was and did not even know or understand what Watergate was.  

Item 2

My wife is greatly disturbed by recent events in the school system where she teaches. A while back the Middle School decided to decorate the inside of the school with flags from all over the world and representing all different kinds of people and organizations. Well, it turns out one of the teachers at the school is a lesbian and brought in a rainbow flag to display with all the other flags. Once it went up the shit hit the proverbial fan. Anonymous death threats and bomb threats ensued. Obviously there were some Christian fundamentalist wackos in town that took it upon themselves to do the most Christian thing and threaten to kill people, including children, unless the offending flag was taken down. A police investigation was launched and as far as I know nobody has yet been brought to justice for the threats. They stopped as soon as the police got involved but not to be completely deterred these folks who have an issue with the rainbow flag notified a wacko Christian fundamentalist group from Kansas of the situation. They are flying in Monday morning to protest at the school and have notified the local authorities they will be displaying signs that say such lovely stuff as "All fags must die" and "Gays will all burn in Hell." All the way from Kansas to protest one flag among about 400 or so. It should be noted that our government now views this sort of protesters as potential terrorists. So the town where my wife works will be on high terror alert on Monday. The safety of the children in the school system is obviously in question due to this activity.     

Item 3

This sort of relates to the item above. A friend of mine who is a first responder recently gave me copies of a terrorist attack training exorcise to read. The funny thing is that in the exorcise the terrorists are not crazy Muslims that are going to blow us up in the name of Allah. It's a group called The Defense of Marriage Militia. I kid you not. In discussing this I discovered that one of the supposed major concerns of our government in terms of domestic terrorism is not Osama's boys blowing stuff up it's our very own home grown wackjobs doing it. In other words, everybody is a suspect. Forget racial profiling they believe things have reached such a fevered pitch in this country that anyone of these Christian fundamentalist groups could go off at anytime and start poisoning people or blowing them to bits. Not to mention we now have put terrorism so front and center that they figure it's bound to have stirred up some nasty thoughts in the wrong peoples heads...I mean you can just imagine.
