One of the weird by products of our legal system is that the bad guys get rights too. Which, I guess is a good thing. But, I thought you couldn't take the gun home until it was registered. This is one of the reasons why I advocate for stiff laws regarding firearms. If there are no loopholes that allow you to take your gun home in the registration limbo period, then you're legally covered. In the meantime, he could have avoided the legal tangle he's in now by throwing blunt objects at the intruder.
Actually, it's a no win situation for that guy. Had he not used his gun, the bad guy probably would have gotten upstairs and done real harm to his family. I hope that somewhere in his soul, he realizes that he probably did the right thing.
I come from that cheesy "can't we all just get along" philosophy that in our violent existance, just doesn't hold water. Knowing the disparity between how I think the world SHOULD be vs. how it is, is why I'm still pursuadable on the gun issue. Part of me thinks that all conflict should be handled by non violent means...counting coup, throwing pies, thumb wrestling, etc. But the father part of me knows that if I had a firearm and someone came after my lovely bride and my chilluns, I would shoot to kill. I'm so conflicted.
This is why my home is filled with blunt objects. I've got a claw hammer, damnit, and I'm not afraid to use it!
Perhaps I should move up to pnumatic tools,
PRH
