It's a great question, DSlacker. Those who immerse themselves in political theory would likely have a more complete and thorough answer to this. But if I were to narrow the scope of your question down to what would compel the GOP to sacrifice democratic values and allow these transgressions and blatant violations to occur, I still feel the strongest driving force and largest inflection point is the GOP's underlying fear that they are losing their cultural majority. They may couch it in culture wars or anti-woke rhetoric but this fear (often translated into anger) that their heritage is being systematically stolen from them allows susceptibility to manipulation from a charismatic strong man who promises to restore their culture back to the rightful throne. Of course when they finally realize it too much power has already been consolidated to effectively push back. I probably sound more sanctimonious and pontificating than I mean to but I wanted to take your question at face value and answer with my best thoughts.
