It's the same promise made by the Council of Nicaea at the founding of the Roman Catholic Church, when the thousand leading Christian bishops joined forces with Emperor Constantine's decaying Roman empire, promising death for the heretics and conquest for the faithful. Rome got a fitful 200 years of continued power with the burst of imperialist energy they received from this alliance. Monotheism suits tyrants, it provides the psychological basis for their tyranny. And when Rome inevitably fell, hollowed out by its own corruption, they got the Dark Ages, 500 years of warlordism, horror and superstition.
