This reminds me of a post David B. made here many years ago, when he used to participate more often.  Someone was discussing libertarianism, and he countered that especially in larger cities like Los Angeles, people are just too interdependent for that to work.  I think he was likening some strains of individualism or libertarianism as being a kind of selfishness or willful blindness to real needs.

My thought then is similar to now.  There's a lot more room for libertarianism in the hinterlands and lesser-populated areas.  For people who value that degree of freedom, moving is one potential solution.  But in really dense urban areas, including where I live in Houston, there's enough interdependence that a little more structure and organization is needed.

Some/many Republicans seem to be speaking to people away from cities and to people in cities who wish they were away.  Going too far toward laissez faire creates economic opportunities for a few, but perhaps in a kind of selfish, blood-sucking form.

I think that's kind of what David was getting at.
