You're right. And to start to defeat that mindset, I think you have to have the loss of (or at least severe diminishing of) the idea of American exceptionalism. There are some pretty exception things here, but the idea that country is inherently exceptional, favored by God (?!), or that its citizens have some kind of super "work hard, suck it up" superpower is ludicrous. What the country had on its side from about WWI through now is economy of scale. As China and other rise, that becomes less of an advantage. It's going to be an interesting ride from here. Can we manage all this without completely killing the free enterprise spirit that has often been a positive aspect?
