David Hume, an enlightenment philosopher from Scotland, as an atheist, still believed in organized religion as a way of maintaining order among us.
He was right, but that same religion is also responsible for most of the terror-driven wars taking place across the planet, past and present, the Crusades, for example, and currently Isis.
As Peter points out, free will is becoming more and more of a questioned concept. Some say 95% of our behavior is determined by past experience, by childhood deposits into our unconscious. The more valid free will is questioned, the less we are responsible for our sins, one can argue.
We are on the verge of a new enlightenment.
