I was not kidding when I said about a week or so ago that I heard a report on the radio that claimed soccer is now the number 3 sport in the United States in terms of popularity...surpassing both the NBA and NHL as far as fan base goes in this country.
Fan base as in viewer share? I would pick them this way.
#1 - NFL
#2 - NBA
#3 - MLB
#4 - NHL
#5 - WNBA
#6 - Soccer
The report claimed the NFL is number one, baseball two, soccer was at three and the NBA was a distant fourth
Sounds like the wishful thinking report. If soccer could draw in major markets we would have a league and soccer cards in gum packs. What are they basing it on?
They said you could combine the NHL and NBA numbers and it still would not catch soccer at 3
Most people I know that watch soccer do it at their kids leagues. We tried more than once in the USA
(which I think is probably because the NHL does some dismal numbers now). The report predicted that in the next ten years soccer would pass baseball and be second only to the NFL. So either that report was way off or the guy from CNN is. I'm betting the guy from CNN is wrong and based on what I've seen here during these World Cup games, it looks to me like folks here have soccer fever.

You will notice immediately they say this years soccer will be a footnote, but of course that is not the case. If they win it will be
