Soccer is an inexpensive sport natural to third world poor countries. Hence its initial popularity there. But as a game it has attracted fans from all over the world, and is rapidly replacing sandlot baseball as a game for kids in this country.

Baseball, football, and basketball require more money in uniforms, playing fields, and equipment.

Nike won't miss a beat, though, in extracting what money there is to spend on soccer no matter what country it's played in.

I look for the Nike swoosh to become as ubiqitous in soccer as it is in track and other US sports. Like a plague it will spread to all corners of the planet.
