I was there at the right place and at the appointed time. The doctor I was to run with, I had never met. Our mutual friend was our dentist who had suggested this meeting.

We ran in a circle, some of which followed the Atlantic on a Florida beach, until we had completed 12 miles.

The good doctor looked at my shoes, a pair of high topped Converse tennis shoes, and said, "you really ought to get yourself a good pair of running shoes."

He was wearing Addidas, so I bought a pair.

First time out, I thought I was running on a cloud.

We ran Boston together in 1974, his Addidas beat my Addidas by a couple of minutes.

I dread to think what I'd be running in today had I not had to go to the dentist that day in 1973.

I hope Addidas can hold its own now that that third-world employer, Nike, has discovered the goldmine awaiting in soccer.
