Good post, Reg. As to Why? My take...
1.) Revenge - The Neocons (Rummy & Cheney et.al.) wanted to prove 41 wrong about not going all the way to Bagdahd. They've beeen smarting about it ever since and 19 Saudis handed them a golden opourtunity.
2.) Client State - The Shah got deposed, Sadham went south, and the Saudi's have been acting hinkey for the last ten years, trying to get our bases out. Bushco thought it would be a cake walk, we'd put in Chalabi & a puppet rergime, build our bases & have a solid presence in the region.
3.) OIL - Like it or not, it is a strategic comodity. We went in to keep our economy humming.. One of my High school history teacers told the class " Always look for the resources of the country we are fighting over. All wars, at their root, are fought for economic reasons." If this had worked out, Hummers would still be selling at a record clip.
As to why we're still there?
PRIDE - Bushco is incapable of admitting it fucked up.
