musicians: occasionally gifted, often quite troubled. ain't we a peach? i had to let go a bassist from my (Stark Raving) band a few years back cause he was so stoned at every waking moment that he couldn't even remember the parts that he'd come up with himself, much less play them consistently live. sheesh!
I got in the habit of recording EVERYTHING due to a bassist that was like that. He was an INCREDIBLE lead player but was playing bass since I was already on guitar. He was WAY better than me technically and I often tried to bring in other bassists so he could play leads and I would handle rhythm but he just wouldn't have it. Anyway...he asked me once, "Why do you record everything? Do you plan to release any of this shit?" And my response was, "No, I'm building a case against you." We listened to all the horrid practices and he was terminated that night.
Now...weird things bandmembers have done? My old drummer Mike...who I'm still good friends with, is one of the mellowest, dryest humored individual I know. But he joined a band called Vibralux after playing with me in 3 other bands.
They're a glam/drag band and they're loud and screechy and they dress like anime porn characters...but folks love em. So...was it a dumb thing that he quit my band to join this one? Nope. But I'm sorry...I'm not doing THAT for my 15 minutes of fame. http://www.vibralux.org
They play a lot of fetish shows.
Me...I'm keepin' my pants ON.
